Thom Brennaman is finally out of a job after a month of controversy and speculation. Son of former Cincinnati Reds radio sportscaster Marty Brennaman, Thomas, was already on edge after the incident. However, it’s not a surprise at all with the state of American popular culture. Everyone knew the fact that a mistake like this is severely punishable in the current climate.
LGBTQ+ discussion in America is a matter of flash-points, and so is the usage of appropriate terms. Thomas, however, clearly didn’t fulfil that criteria on-air. Also, it’s a catastrophe in these times, especially, of cancel culture so ready to everyone.
What is causing such a stir for the veteran sportscaster?
During the nightcap of a doubleheader on Wednesday against Kansas City, Thom was in the booth. In the broadcast it was audible that he was using a very problematic gay-slur. However, the voice in-charge received a suspension shortly after from the parent club.
Shortly after the incident, Brennaman came out with a clarification. This is what the sportscaster had to say:-
“I made a comment tonight that I am deeply ashamed of. I am so very, very sorry. priding myself as a man of faith. However, I don’t know if I’ll be putting on this headset again.”
Following is the statement by Cincinnati Reds in response to the situation:-

Contract termination and response after a month:-
After an initial spell of suspension, the worst kept secret is finally out. Thom won’t be coming back tot he broadcast boot for some time, maybe ever again. The sportscaster himself now has resigned from the profession after the grave error.
During his final statements, he tried to apologize for the mistake. Also, openly offered an unconditional apology towards the gay community.
Following is his Retirement letter:-
My family and I have decided that I am going to step away from my role as the television voice of the Cincinnati Reds. I would like to thank the Reds, Reds fans and LGBTQ Community for the incredible support and grace they have shown my family and me.
To this great city, my hometown, a sincere thank you. I truly regret what I said and I’m so very sorry. No one loves this town more than me. I have been in this profession that I love for 33 years. And it is my hope and intention to return. And if I’m given that opportunity, I will be a better broadcaster and a much better person.
I am grateful for the forgiveness so many have extended to me, especially those in the LGBTQ community who I have met, spoken with and listened to almost daily over the last five weeks. With their continued guidance, I hope to be a voice for positive change.
