What’s Coming to Netflix DVD in January 2020

You can tell at a glance which content is available to you, depending on your subscription plan.Black Subheadings indicate U.S. Streaming and DVD Release Dates. Red Subheadings tell you if the titles are available in Canada. Green Subheadings are for Amazon Prime Instant Streaming titles. You’ll find some TV series on Hulu, AcornTV, Networks, and other platforms information in Pink. I can only include selected Canadian Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu titles – TV series and hot new movies. There aren’t enough hours in the day to put in more! If you’re wondering about something, leave a comment, and I’ll try to dig it up.  Here’s how you can tell which content is available on your plan:

DVD Only = Available to rent only for those with a DVD subscription.  It is going to be the newest movies.  Quite a bit of TV starts out this way and streams later (and some videos).

Instant Streaming Available = Available for all subscription types!  It is content that you can rent on a DVD or stream instantly — the Holy Grail of Netflix content.

Instant Streaming Only = Available only for those with an Instant Streaming subscription.  Netflix Exclusives tend to start here and maybe become available on DVD later.

  • Hip Hop Evolution – Season 4 (docuseries) – This series traces the genre’s history from the 1970s to the present. The U.S. and Canada Streaming, downloadable
  • Tiny House Nation – Series 2 (TV reality) – More tiny houses to be built! U.S. and Canada Streaming
  • Ares – Season 1 (Dutch TV horror, Jade Olieberg, Tobias Kersloot) – Dutch language series about a college student joining a secret society. There’s bad stuff in there, student. The U.S. and Canada Streaming, downloadable
  • Wer kann, der kann! – Season 1 (German TV cooking competition) – This is German Nailed It! I don’t like it in English; I doubt I’ll like it in German. The U.S. and Canada Streaming, downloadable
  • Tyler Perry’s A Fall From Grace (drama, Crystal Fox, Bresha Webb) – A woman on trial for the murder of her husband has a young lawyer in her corner.It looks great. The U.S. and Canada Streaming, downloadable

  • Just Add Magic: Mystery City – Season 1 (TV family, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) – I’m not sure about the cast for this magical cookbook spin-off series. Amazon Prime Video Only
  • Russell Peters: Deported (comedy special) – This stand-up special recorded in Mumbai, India. Amazon Prime Video Only
  • Rob Delaney: Jackie (comedy special) – I love Rob Delaney (he was so good in Catastrophe). I will watch his stand-up special. Amazon Prime Video Only

January 16th

  • Ni no Kuni (Japanese anime, Kento Yamazaki) – I’m not sure, but you can probably watch this anime movie based on a video game quest in English. The U.S. and Canada Streaming, downloadable.

  • Grace and Frankie – Season 6 (TV comedy, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda) – It took me some time to get hooked on this show and now I’m unfortunate to see it end. It’s been great, ladies! The U.S. and Canada Streaming, downloadable.
  • Quien a Hierro Mata/Eye For an Eye (Spanish drama, Luis Tosar, Xan Cejudo) – Spanish language film about an aging drug dealer and a nurse seeking revenge. The U.S. and Canada Streaming, downloadable.

  • Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts – Season 1 (family animation, Karen Fukuhara, Dee Bradley Baker) – Based on comics, this series is about a girl exploring in a post-apocalyptic world filled with mutant creatures. The U.S. and Canada Streaming, downloadable

  • Veep – Season 7 (TV comedy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tony Hale) – It’s sad to see a quality series end, and I hope Louis-Dreyfus will be back with another. DVD Only
  • Line of Duty (action, Aaron Eckhart, Courtney Eaton) – Not to be confused with the TV series, this movie is about cop searching for a kidnapped girl while on the live stream. DVD Only
  • Beyond the Law (action, Steven Seagal, DMX) – Oh, Seagal, you will never quit these, will you? He’s on a quest for justice here, which is no surprise. DVD Only
  • The Death and Life of John F. Donovan (drama, Kit Harington, Natalie Portman) – This drama about a young actor reminiscing about letters to and from a late TV actor has an incredible cast, including Kathy Bates and Thandie Newton. DVD Only
  • Gemini Man (sci-fi, Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead) – Oh, aging hitman, you can’t escape your younger clone. He wants to kill you, so you should maybe examine your life choices. DVD Only
  • Jexi (comedy, Adam DeVine, Alexandra Shipp) – I will see this! It’s about a digital assistant that has issues with…malice. DVD Only
  • Piranhas (Italian drama, Francesco di Napoli, Ar Tem) – Italian language film about a group of teenagers who go to work for the local crime syndicate. DVD Only
  • Running With the Devil (action, Nicolas Cage, Laurence Fishburne) – Drug henchmen checking on supply line issues. DVD Only
  • Britt-Marie Was Here (Swedish dramedy, Pernilla August, Peter Haber) – is based on a book by Fredrik Backman, who also wrote A Man Called Ove. I think I will read the book before seeing this Swedish language adaptation. DVD Only
  • Mister America (comedy, Tim Heidecker, Gregg Turkington) – Heidecker himself (in name only) as a guy running for San Bernadino DA. DVD Only

  • Big Little Lies – Season 2 (TV drama, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon) – I have to admit that I’m curious where they took this series after it departed from the book. I may put it in the queue to find out. DVD Only – you can catch it streaming on HBO
  • Vera – Series 9 (TV drama, Brenda Blethyn, David Leon) – This British crime drama, based on a series of novels, is DVD Only on Netflix. You can stream it on Britbox or YouTube Subscription TV
  • Joker (thriller, Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro) – I don’t know. I’m wearing out on this character. DVD Only
  • Girl on the Third Floor (horror, C.M. Punk, Trieste Dunn) – Man renovating house finds himself reliving his past. Sounds a little bit Shining-ish? DVD Only
  • The Lighthouse (thriller, Willem Dafoe, Robert Pattinson) – This 1890s period piece has garnered a lot of awards for director Robert Eggers and star Defoe and Pattinson. It’s about two men trying to keep their sanity at a remote, mysterious lighthouse. DVD Only
  • The Shed (horror, Jay Jay Warren, Cody Kostro) – A downtrodden teenager discovers a vampire living in his grandfather’s shed. What to do??? DVD Only
  • A Million Little Pieces (drama, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton) – is based on a book about drug addiction that the author tried to pass off as a memoir. Why would they make this mess into a movie? DVD Only
  • Bulletproof 2 (comedy, Faizon Love, Kirk Fox) – DEA agent and criminal in an action buddy movie. DVD Only
  • Crown Vic (thriller, Thomas Jane, Luke Kleintank) – A police officer and his rookie partner deal with a rough shift in Los Angeles. DVD Only

Homeland – Seasons 6-7 (TV drama, Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin) – I’m so happy to see this! I don’t like to use my Netflix DVD rentals on shows my husband doesn’t watch with me, so I’m glad to be able to take this one off my Netflix queue.
