According to the NYT, Bill Gates Sr played a significant role in establishing the world largest philanthropy, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “My dad’s influence on our philanthropy was just as big. Throughout my childhood, he and my mom taught me by example what generosity looked like in how they used their time and resources,” said Bill Gates
In the year 1994, Sr planned to retire from his law practice in a few years. When one evening he, his son and his daughter-in-law ent to a movie. Standing in the ticket line, Bill told his father that he is being overloaded with appeals for charity, but he was too busy running Microsoft even to answer them. Then the idea of foundation came to Sr mind.
“The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation would not be what it is today without my dad. More than anyone else, he shaped the values of the foundation. He was collaborative, judicious, and serious about learning. He was dignified but hated anything that seemed pretentious,” Gates Jr said.
